#Ghana’s Broken Political System: A Barrier to Development.

Alexander Afriyie
Ghana, a country with immense potential, is struggling to achieve meaningful development due to its broken political system. Despite its rich natural resources and talented population, Ghana’s economy is stagnant, infrastructure is inadequate, and social services are underfunded.
The root cause of these challenges lies in the country’s political system, which prioritizes personal interests over the needs of citizens. Corruption, nepotism, and patronage politics have become endemic, leading to widespread disillusionment and apathy among citizens.
The decline of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Bono Region is a stark reminder of the consequences of poor governance. From 11 seats in 2016 to 1 seat in 2024, the party’s collapse is a testament to the failures of leadership and the disconnect between politicians and citizens.
Ghana needs a new vision for politics that prioritizes the needs of citizens and promotes sustainable development. This requires fundamental reforms to address the systemic issues hindering development, including strengthening institutions, promoting transparency and accountability, and decentralizing power.
Citizens must demand change and hold their leaders accountable. By working together, Ghanaians can create a brighter future and ensure that their country reaches its full potential.
The Way Forward.
To achieve meaningful development, Ghana must:
1. Reform its political system: Strengthen institutions, promote transparency and accountability, and decentralize power.
2. Promote citizen engagement: Encourage citizen participation in governance and decision-making.
3. Foster a culture of accountability: Hold leaders accountable for their actions and promote a culture of transparency.
By taking these steps, Ghana can overcome its development challenges and build a better future for its citizens.
