A violent robbery incident occurred on the Sunyani-Atronie-Ntotroso highway, resulting in the death of a Ford passenger car driver and injuring several passengers. The incident has sparked widespread concern and fear among residents and motorists who use the road.
According to eyewitnesses, the robbery occurred on a Friday afternoon when the vehicle was ambushed by armed robbers. The driver, who has not been identified, was shot in the forehead and died on the spot. Two passengers who sustained gunshot wounds are currently receiving treatment at the Sunyani Teaching Hospital.
The assemblyman for the Atronie electoral area, Richard Adu, helped convey the deceased driver’s body to the hospital. He explained that the robbers had earlier encountered military personnel escorting Newmont Ahafo South Mine workers and retreated, leaving behind one of their guns. The robbers allegedly returned to retrieve the gun and subsequently ambushed the Ford passenger car.
Fear and Concern Among Residents
The incident has rekindled fears among residents and passengers who ply the road for economic activities. Many have expressed concerns about the safety of the road, which has become notorious for highway robberies. A farmer from the Atronie farming community, Afia Dufia, stated that she and her colleagues are unable to go to their farms due to the robbery activities and sporadic guner’s encounter with soldiers earlier that day may have contributed to the attack.
Security Measures
In response to the incident, the Bono Regional Police Command, in collaboration with Newmont Ahafo South Mine, the Sunyani Municipal Assembly, and the Atronie traditional council, have erected a police post on the road to check the rampant robberies. The police have assured that the operation will be permanent, with fixed and mobile teams patrolling the road to protect motorists.
Government Response
The Sunyani Municipal Chief Executive, Antwi Agyei Vincent, has sent his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and assured them that investigations are underway to arrest the perpetrators. He also assured residents that President Mahama is committed to constructing the road, which was mentioned during his thank-you tour to the region.
The incident highlights the need for improved security measures and infrastructure development on the Sunyani-Atronie-Ntotroso highway. The government’s response to the incident and commitment to constructing the road will be closely watched by residents and motorists who use the road.
