The High Court in Accra has convicted Thomas Andy Owusu, an aide to Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), in a corruption case related to illegal mining licensing. Owusu, who was the second accused in the case, was convicted on his own plea after entering into a plea agreement with the Office of the Special Prosecutor.
According to the agreement, Owusu will pay a fine of GHS 6,000 (500 penalty units) and restitution of GHS 200,000 to the state. The conviction stems from allegations that Owusu accepted a bribe of GHS 15,000 to influence a public officer to bypass licensing requirements for illegal mining.
The case will now focus on the first accused, Charles Bissue, who is facing charges of Using Public Office for Profit. His trial is set to continue on June 10, 2025, with a Case Management Conference.
