#Bail Conditions in Ghana: Alfred Agbesi Woyome (54 million) and Chairman Wontumi (50 million)

By: Alexander Afriyie
The recent arrest and detention of Chairman Wontumi, who is struggling to meet bail conditions of GHC 50 million, has sparked a national conversation about the effectiveness of Ghana’s bail system. The high bail amount has raised eyebrows, with some questioning whether digital solutions, such as electronic monitoring devices, could provide an alternative.
In the United States and other countries, digital tracking devices like ankle bracelets are used to monitor suspects’ movements while they await trial. These devices allow individuals to remain in their communities while ensuring they comply with court orders.
As Ghana considers innovative approaches to its bail system, the question remains: could digital solutions like electronic monitoring devices provide a more accessible and effective way to manage bail conditions?
