Ghana Police Service Crackdown on Ablekuma North Election Violence

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has given the Greater Accra Regional Police Commander an ultimatum to arrest perpetrators of violence during the Ablekuma North parliamentary election re-run by the end of July 25. Failure to comply will result in the commander’s removal from office.

The police had come under intense pressure to bring those responsible for the violent incidents to justice. The July 11 by-election was marred by chaotic scenes, prompting concerns among election observers and the public. Some individuals have already been identified through video footage, and a few suspects are in custody, with others willing to surrender.

Key Developments:
– Arrests and Investigations: The Accra Regional Police Command has begun reviewing and analyzing multiple video recordings to identify those involved in the violence. They’ve also started taking statements from complainants and witnesses to support ongoing investigations.
– Police Action: A police officer captured on video assaulting a journalist has been interdicted and faces criminal charges for assault.
– Public Response: The public has been urged to assist in the ongoing investigations by contacting the police through emergency numbers 18555 or 191.

The Ghana Police Service remains committed to ensuring accountability for all forms of violence, intimidation, or misconduct during elections. The outcome of these investigations will likely shape public confidence in future electoral processes.
