A Ghanaian financial institution has fallen victim to a significant ransomware attack, resulting in the theft of approximately $120,000 and the encryption of nearly 100 terabytes of critical data. The incident was uncovered as part of Operation Sentinel, a broader cybercrime crackdown led by INTERPOL, which has seen hundreds of suspects arrested across Africa and millions of dollars recovered from cybercriminal networks.
The attack, which targeted a major financial institution in Ghana, has disrupted operations and highlighted the growing threat of cybercrime in Africa. Authorities managed to recover nearly 30 terabytes of data through advanced malware analysis and have made multiple arrests.
Operation Sentinel, which ran from October 27 to November 27, 2025, involved law enforcement agencies from 19 African countries and resulted in the arrest of 574 suspects and the recovery of $3 million. The operation targeted business email compromise, digital extortion, and ransomware schemes, with estimated financial losses exceeding $21 million.
