A Ghanaian journalist has written an open letter to the Deputy Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Justice Srem-Sai, appealing for resolution in the case of an assault against colleague Latif Iddrisu of JoyNews.
In the letter, the journalist recounts that Latif Iddrisu was assaulted by individuals identified as police officers at the CID Headquarters in March 2018 while reporting on a detention. The incident resulted in Latif suffering injuries, including a fractured skull, and has required ongoing medical treatment.
The journalist notes that Latif has incurred significant medical expenses, with costs covered by personal savings, family, friends, and the Multimedia Group. Outstanding debts include $26,000 to Loma Linda University Medical Center.
A suit was filed against the Police in 2019, and the case remains pending in court. The Police Intelligence and Professional Standards (PIPS) reportedly recommended compensation, but no payment has been made.
The journalist appeals to Dr. Srem-Sai to consider the case, citing the state’s commitment to protecting journalists and addressing harm suffered in the line of duty. The Ghana Journalists Association and other groups have also called for resolution, including:
– His Eminence the National Chief Imam
– Martin Luther Kpebu Esq
– Dr. Kenneth Ashigbey
– Professor Audrey Gadzekpo
– Anas Aremeyaw Anas
Dr. Srem-Sai had previously stated the state’s commitment to protecting journalists at the Ghana Journalists Association Dinner Night on December 23, 2025. The outcome of the case is pending.
