#GRA Responds to SML’s Expanded Mandate Claims

By: Alexander Afriyie
The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has issued a statement clarifying reports that Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Ltd. (SML) has been given an expanded mandate to cover Ghana’s upstream petroleum and solid minerals sectors.
According to the GRA, SML’s services in these sectors remain suspended pending further review, as announced in April 2024. The Authority has not instructed SML to activate or resume operations under the 2023 Consolidation of Revenue Assurance Services Contract.
The GRA emphasized its commitment to protecting the nation’s revenue with integrity and transparency. This clarification comes after reports emerged that SML’s mandate had been expanded, sparking concerns among stakeholders.
The development has significant implications for Ghana’s revenue landscape, and the government’s response will be closely watched. Some individuals, including those who have expressed concerns about the deal, hope that the government will proceed to complete the cancellation of the contract, which was spearheaded by Ken Ofori-Atta.
