#Massive Power Theft Uncovered at Rehoboth Estate in Ghana

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has uncovered widespread illegal electricity connections at Rehoboth Estate in Kweiman, a suburb in the Greater Accra Region. According to reports, over 400 homes in the estate were found to have been connected to the electricity grid illegally, with some residents bypassing meters or making direct connections to the grid.
The ECG’s Accra East revenue team, led by a nationwide revenue mobilization exercise, made the discovery on Monday, June 16, 2025. The team found that the illegal connections were not limited to residential homes, as a block factory within the estate was also discovered to be using an illegal connection to power its operations
The ECG has taken swift action, disconnecting electricity supply to the affected homes and warning of penalties for those found engaging in such practices. “Power to these customers has been disconnected, they have been surcharged for the electricity they used without paying and charged a penalty fee for engaging in the illegalities,” a statement from the ECG echoed similar sentiments expressed in past instances of power theft.
The incident has sparked outrage, with many questioning how such widespread power theft could occur in a gated community. The ECG has vowed to intensify efforts to combat power theft and revenue losses, with plans to hand over some cases to the police for prosecution .
Key Findings:
– Number of Affected Homes: Over 400 homes disconnected due to illegal connections
– Type of Illegal Connections: Meter bypassing, direct connections, and tampering with meters
– Action Taken: Electricity supply disconnected, penalty fees charged, and possible prosecution
