Accra, Ghana – In a surprising development, the lawyer representing Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, former Board Chair of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), has withdrawn services in the ongoing SkyTrain case.
According to reports, the lawyers filed a motion at the High Court seeking to withdraw their representation, citing reasons that may be related to the breakdown of the attorney-client relationship or non-payment of fees.
The case, which involves allegations of causing financial loss to the state and willful dissipation of public funds, has been adjourned to July 9 for the court to rule on the defence’s motion.
The SkyTrain project, a proposed urban rail system for Accra, has been mired in controversy over alleged financial irregularities. Professor Ameyaw-Akumfi and former GIIF CEO Solomon Asamoah are facing charges related to the project’s procurement process.
The withdrawal of representation has sparked speculation about the potential implications for the trial. Will the case proceed without Professor Ameyaw-Akumfi’s current legal team, or will new lawyers be appointed to represent him? The court’s decision on July 9 will provide clarity on the next steps in this high-profile case.
