The President Mahama government has initiated moves to reverse the names of several public universities changed by former President Akufo-Addo’s administration. The universities in question include:
1. George Grant University of Mines and Technology (formerly University of Mines and Technology) : Renamed in 2018.
2. Simon Diedong Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (formerly UDS Wa Campus) : Elevated to full university status and renamed in 2020.
3. C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences (formerly UDS Navrongo Campus): Granted autonomy and renamed in 2020.
4. Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (formerly UEW Kumasi and Mampong Campuses) : Merged and reconstituted in 2020.
5. Dr. Hilla Limann Technical University (formerly Wa Technical University) Renamed.
Additionally, proposals to rename two more universities are reportedly being considered:
1. University of Energy and Natural Resources Proposed renaming to Kofi Abrefa Busia University of Energy and Natural Resources.
2. Ho Technical University: Proposed renaming after Dr. Ephraim Amu.
The decision to reverse these name changes is likely to spark debate and discussion about the role of government in shaping the identities of public institutions. Alexander Afriyie
