Accra, Ghana – In a bid to combat corruption and improve the efficiency of traffic enforcement, the Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service is set to reduce its presence on roads and introduce digital payments for traffic offenses.
According to Alexander Kwaku Obeng, Head of Research, Education and Training at the MTTD, the new measures are designed to minimize the opportunities for police officers to engage in corrupt practices, such as soliciting bribes from motorists.
“We are putting measures in place to reduce police presence on the roads and introduce digital payments for traffic offenses as a means to combat corruption,” Obeng stated.
The move is expected to not only reduce the incidence of corruption but also make it easier for motorists to pay fines and penalties for traffic offenses. With digital payments, motorists will no longer have to physically visit police stations or interact with police officers to settle their fines, thereby reducing the opportunities for corrupt practices.
The MTTD’s initiative is part of a broader effort to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of traffic enforcement in Ghana. By leveraging technology, the MTTD aims to create a more transparent and accountable system for traffic enforcement, which will ultimately benefit motorists and the general public.
The introduction of digital payments for traffic offenses is expected to be rolled out in the coming months, with details to be announced by the MTTD. Motorists are expected to benefit from the new system, which will make it easier and more convenient to pay fines and penalties. Alexander Afriyie
