Charles Nii Armah Mensah was released on bail yesterday evening after being interrogated by the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) for several hours. Mensah arrived at the EOCO office around 3 pm and initially refused to cooperate with investigators until his counsel arrived.
Despite EOCO’s closing time being 5 pm, the staff and operational team decided to continue with the interrogation, which eventually concluded around 9 pm. Officers left the office around 11 pm after completing their tasks.
Mensah was granted bail around 9 pm, shortly after the interrogation ended. The bail amount was set at GHC10,000,000, with two sureties required to be justified. Once the sureties are presented, EOCO will undertake a surety inspection, a standard protocol, after which Mensah would be released from custody.
According to sources, Mensah has been unable to identify the person from whom he purchased a Lamborghini Urus vehicle except to say that he purchased it from the “Street” and from someone possibly called “ZAK” who may have contacted him on WhatsApp but whose identity he does not know and whose contact he has thrown away.
Additionally, Mensah does not possess any documentation in terms of receipt or transfer documents that shows he owns or purchased the said vehicle except a custom declaration document in his possession bearing the name of Nana Kwabena Amuah who is currently in jail.
The case has sparked widespread interest in Ghana, with many calling for greater transparency and accountability in the country’s financial transactions. As the investigation continues, Mensah’s release on bail has raised questions about the effectiveness of EOCO’s efforts to combat organized crime and corruption in Ghana.
In a statement, EOCO’s Head of Public Relations said, “We are committed to ensuring that all individuals who engage in corrupt practices are brought to justice. We will continue to investigate this matter and take all necessary steps to ensure that the law is upheld.”
The case is ongoing, and further developments are expected in the coming days.
