Accra, Ghana – In a significant ruling, Alexander Sarfo-Kantanka was acquitted and discharged by the court on May 26, 2025. The case, which began in September 2021, involved 26 counts of corruption related to a public election.
According to reports, Sarfo-Kantanka allegedly bribed 26 Juaben Municipal Assembly members to secure nomination as Municipal Chief Executive. The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) launched an investigation into the matter on November 2, 2021.
After a thorough investigation, the OSP charged Sarfo-Kantanka with 26 counts of corruption on May 24, 2022. He pleaded not guilty to all charges on June 29, 2022. The trial commenced at the Kumasi High Court on October 20, 2022.
The OSP closed its case on July 13, 2023, and Sarfo-Kantanka filed a Submission of No Case on November 6, 2023. However, the court dismissed the submission on April 9, 2024.
Sarfo-Kantanka appealed the decision at the Court of Appeal and sought a stay of proceedings at the Kumasi High Court, but both attempts were unsuccessful. The case was adjourned on November 28, 2024, due to the transfer of the presiding judge.
In the final ruling on May 26, 2025, the court acquitted and discharged Sarfo-Kantanka, citing that video evidence did not show that he gave money to influence assembly members. The case lasted 2 years and 11 months. Alexander Afriyie
