A chieftaincy and family dispute has landed in the Kumasi High Court after the Ekuona Royal Family of Parkoso filed multiple applications against former Abusuapanin Kofi Owusu, popularly known as “Tupac.”
The family is seeking two main orders from the court:
1. Disclosure of Burial Site: The application asks the court to compel Kofi Owusu to reveal the exact location where the late music legend Daddy Lumba was buried. The family says the burial details remain unclear following the musician’s death.
2. Financial Accountability: The Ekuona Royal Family is also demanding that the deposed Abusuapanin render a full account of his stewardship to the family, covering his tenure before he was removed from office.
In response, Kofi Owusu has filed his own application. He contends that he organized Daddy Lumba’s funeral jointly with Brempongmaa and Wofa Yaw Poku, suggesting responsibility for the burial arrangements was shared.
The legal battle has expanded beyond the former Abusuapanin. The family filed a separate application against Kofi Owusu’s lawyers. According to the family, the legal team previously represented the Ekuona Royal Family itself. Now that Kofi Owusu has been deposed as Abusuapanin, the family argues the lawyers must explain why they continue to hold themselves out as counsel for him, raising issues of conflict of interest.
The Kumasi High Court has adjourned the case to 25 June 2026 for further hearing.
Daddy Lumba, one of Ghana’s most iconic highlife musicians, passed away year. Questions around his funeral and burial have since sparked tension within sections of the family and traditional circles.
