Husband and wife lost their lives last Sunday morning when the building in which they were sleeping collapsed on them at Ahenema Kokoben in the Atwima Kwanwoma District of the Ashanti Region.
The deceased are identified as Banda Doyi, 32 (husband) and Madam Joyce Laweh, 42 and their remains have been deposited at the morgue of A1 Hospital at Anyinam, near Santasi, Kumasi for autopsy.
Ahenema Kokoben Police Station Officer, Chief Inspector Emmanuel Opoku Addai who confirmed the incident to ghanacrimereport.com’s Ebenezer Owusu Ansah said the late couple were living in a single room.
He said it was unclear what might have caused the collapse and that the police had begun investigations into the matter.
“It’s unfortunate that two people have been confirmed dead but while waiting for autopsy, we as police officers have begun our root-cause analysis to fish out all what is surrounding the collapse through investigations”, he assured.
Buildings in Water-logged areasChecks made the ghanacrimereport.com show that the area identified for the building collapse is part of the flood prone-areas of Atwima Kwanwoma District and some residents who spoke in interview were wondering how people were raising buildings in water-logged areas.
They therefore called on the Department of Town and Country Planning to wake up by streamlining its activities and quickening steps to wage war against people raising buildings in water-logged areas.
DCE cautions
The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Atwima Kwanwoma in the Ashanti Region, Nana Okyere Tawiah Antwi who visited the scene of the building collapse expressed shock at the death.
He learnt from his intelligence report that there was a heavy downpour before Sunday morning which overflooded some parts of the Ahenema Kokoben area including the scene of the collapse.
“This is unfortunate and on behalf of the assembly, I express deep condolences and sympathse with the bereaved family”, he state, adding that “And I am by this opportunity cautioning people who are adamant in raising building structures in landmarks marked as water-logged areas to be ready to face the full rigours of the law”.
