By-election looming in Asante Akyem North as Amsterdam Court Clears ways for Extradition of Asante Akyem North MP Ohene Kwame Frimpong to U.S. Over Fraud Allegations

A court in Amsterdam has reportedly approved the extradition of Ohene Kwame Frimpong, Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, to the United States to face multiple charges including fraud, money laundering, and romance scam-related offences.

The ruling clears the way for his transfer to U.S. authorities, where legal proceedings are expected to continue. U.S. prosecutors have not yet publicly detailed the specific indictments.

Background
Mr. Frimpong, who entered Parliament in January 2025, was reportedly detained in the Netherlands earlier this year following a request from U.S. law enforcement. The Amsterdam court’s decision marks a major development in the case after months of legal arguments over the extradition request.

Legal process ahead
Under Dutch and international extradition protocols, Mr. Frimpong will be handed over to U.S. officials for arraignment in a federal court. The charges will be formally read and he will be given the opportunity to enter a plea.

Presumption of innocence
As with all criminal proceedings, the allegations against the MP remain unproven. The charges are yet to be tested in court, and Mr. Frimpong is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Reactions
The Parliament of Ghana had not issued an official statement at press time. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it is “monitoring developments and will engage through appropriate diplomatic channels.”

Efforts to reach Mr. Frimpong’s legal team for comment were unsuccessful. His constituency office in Agogo declined to comment.

Next steps
No date has been announced for the transfer. If extradited, Mr. Frimpong would become one of the highest-profile Ghanaian public officials to face trial in the United States in recent years
