Accra, Ghana – In a candid interview with PULSE on JoyNews TV, former NPP MP for Dome Kwabenya, Ambassador to India, and Speaker of Parliament, Prof. Mike Aaron Oquaye, has expressed his disappointment with the hypocrisy surrounding the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. According to Prof. Oquaye, many Ghanaians are quick to criticize the application of the Constitution in this matter, despite having known about the legal process for suspension for decades.
“The legal process for the suspension of a Chief Justice has been part of Ghanaian law for decades, and it’s surprising to see people criticizing it now,” Prof. Oquaye said. “Some of those criticizing the system remained silent when it was part of the law. Why do we allow such things to happen and then cry foul when it appears as if a particular person is going to suffer?”
Prof. Oquaye emphasized the importance of consistency and fairness in applying the Constitution. “What is good for the goose is good for the gander,” he said. “We must work with the principle of fairness and apply the law equally to all.”
As a former Speaker of Parliament and a respected constitutional expert, Prof. Oquaye’s views on the matter carry significant weight. His comments highlight the need for Ghanaians to engage in a more nuanced and principled discussion about the Constitution and its application.
The suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo has sparked a heated debate in Ghana, with some calling for her reinstatement and others supporting the decision. Prof. Oquaye’s remarks add a critical perspective to the discussion, emphasizing the importance of upholding the rule of law and applying the Constitution consistently.
