#Dr. Bawumia’s Credibility Crisis: A Call for Accountability.
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s decision to embark on a thank-you tour after the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) poor electoral performance has sparked widespread criticism. Rather than expressing gratitude, Dr. Bawumia should consider an apology tour to address the numerous challenges that plagued his tenure as Vice President and head of the Economic Management Team.
A Legacy of Failure.
Dr. Bawumia’s leadership of the Economic Management Team was marked by several notable failures, including:
1. Problematic levies: The introduction of contentious taxes, such as the E-levy, sparked widespread discontent and hurt businesses.
2. National mess: The economy struggled under Dr. Bawumia’s watch, with rising inflation, high exchange rates, and stagnant growth.
3. Bank collapses: The collapse of several banks raised concerns about the stability of the financial sector.
4. Domestic Debt Exchange Program (DDEP): The DDEP had devastating effects on bondholders, particularly pensioners, who lost significant portions of their savings.
5. Unpaid youth employment staff: The failure to pay staff under the youth employment program highlighted the administration’s inefficiencies.
6. Arrogance of power: Dr. Bawumia’s perceived arrogance and dismissive attitude towards critics eroded public trust.
7. Corruption: Allegations of corruption and cronyism tainted the administration’s image.
8. Neglect of grassroots supporters: The NPP’s grassroots supporters felt neglected and ignored, leading to disillusionment with the party.
9. National cathedral pit hole. Etc
Shifting Blame Won’t Work.
Dr. Bawumia’s attempts to shift blame and absolve himself of responsibility have only exacerbated the credibility crisis. Ghanaians are no longer convinced by his explanations, and his popularity has plummeted.
An Apology Tour: A Necessary Step.
Instead of a thank-you tour, Dr. Bawumia should embark on an apology tour to:
1. Acknowledge mistakes: Recognize the failures of the Economic Management Team and take responsibility for the harm caused.
2. Show empathy: Express understanding and compassion for those affected by the administration’s policies.
3. Listen to concerns: Engage with Ghanaians, understand their concerns, and address the issues that led to the NPP’s electoral losses.
Dr. Bawumia’s credibility crisis is a result of his failure to take responsibility for the NPP’s failures. An apology tour and a willingness to listen to Ghanaians’ concerns are necessary steps towards restoring trust and credibility. By doing so, Dr. Bawumia can begin to rebuild his reputation and work towards a better future for Ghana. Alexander Afriyie
